Baypakov Karl was born on November 17, 1940 in Talgar, Alma-Ata region. In 1963 he graduated from Leningrad State University with a degree in History and Archaeology; then he completed postgraduate studies at the Ch. Valikhanov Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR with the defense of his Candidate's thesis "Cities and settlements of Semirechye in the 6th – early 12th centuries" in 1966. In 1986, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences "Medieval urban culture South Kazakhstan and Semirechye in the 6th-12th centuries. (Dynamics and main stages of development)". Professor (1995), corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute (1991), corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan (1994), Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan (2004), he was awarded the Honorary title "Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (1998).
After defending his Candidate's thesis, he worked as a Junior Researcher, then as a Senior Researcher at the Ch. Valikhanov Institute of History, Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan (1966-1989); he was a head of the department of Medieval Archaeology, head of the Archaeological Center, then Deputy Director of the IHAE of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (1989-1991). In 1991-2010 he was a director of the new Margulan Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan (MES RK), since 2010 – Honorary Director of the Institute of Archaeology, head of the department of urbanization and nomadism. Since 1971 – deputy director, from 1989 to the present – head of the SKCAE.
His notable achievements in field archaeology were the excavations of Otrar, the opening of a palace complex on the Kuiryktobe settlement with unique carved boards of the 6th-8th centuries; excavations of the citadel and necropolis of Kostobe (medieval Jamukat); excavations of the Kayalyk country palace, the opening and excavation of a Buddhist temple and a palace complex on the Kayalyk settlement, the study of the Zhaiyk settlement in Western Kazakhstan.
Baypakov was a leading specialist in medieval archaeology of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. He also made a significant contribution to the study of the Kangju problem, the relationship between the city and the steppe, nomadic and settled civilizations, and the protection of archaeological monuments.
One of his main research areas was the study of the problem of the Great Silk Road in terms of its political, economic and cultural ties with the states of Eurasia, issues of spiritual culture in the Middle Ages. UNESCO awarded K. Baypakov with a medal issued on this occasion for his contribution to the successful holding of events, the study of the "Great Silk Road – the way of dialogue of cultures" and contribution to world science. Merit of K. Baypakov was in attracting the attention of the world community to the need to preserve and revive the ancient Otrar and monuments on the Kazakhstan segment of the Great Silk Road "China – Central Asia". Since 1966, he was a lecturer, associate professor, professor of KazSU named after Kirov, Al-Farabi KazNU.
Under his leadership, 17 Candidate's theses and 5 Doctoral theses were defended. He was a member of the Commission for awarding State Prizes of the Republic of Kazakhstan (2006-2011), was a member of the UNESCO International Committee for the preparation of the 5-volume "History of the Civilization of Central Asia", co-chairman for the preparation and release of the 5th volume, author and co-editor of articles in volumes 4 and 5 (1991-2005). For his work, he was awarded the UNESCO Medal Head of the section "Monuments of Archaeology" of the Public Council for the Implementation of the state program "Cultural Heritage". International expert of UNESCO: Kazakhstan-Japan-UNESCO project "Preservation of the ancient settlement of Otrar" (2001-2004), on preparation of the cross–border nomination "The Great Silk Road: China - Central Asia" (from 2006 to present).
He was a laureate of the Ch. Valikhanov Prize for the monographic work "Medieval urban culture of Southern Kazakhstan and Semirechye (6th – early 13th century)" (Alma-Ata, 1986), awarded the Order of Parasat (2003), the Order of Barys, III degree (2010); badge "For Merits in the development of Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan" (2002); awarded a diploma and a commemorative badge for his contribution to the study of the spiritual development of Muslim Countries of the Economic Community in the nomination "History, culture, literature and Fine Arts" (2006); laureate of the Independent Award "Platinum Tarlan" in the nomination "Science and Education", Republic of Kazakhstan; awarded the A. Baitursynov Silver Medal of the Association of Universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From 1966 to 2011, 17 author's monographs, 11 co–authored, 7 textbooks and manuals on archaeology for universities, 6 textbooks for schools, 15 albums and over 600 scientific articles in Russian, Kazakh, English, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Japanese, Korean and Chinese have been published in scientific publications in Almaty, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tashkent, Bishkek, Seoul, Tokyo, Islamabad, Berlin, Rome, Milan, London, Cambridge, Urumqi, Paris and Ankara. K. Baypakov is the author of sections of multi-volume editions of the History of the Kazakh SSR (vol. 1 – 1977; vol. 2 - 1979) and the History of Kazakhstan (vol. 1 - 1996, vol . 2 - 1997), The History of Almaty (vol. 1 - 2006).
He died on November 23, 2018 in Almaty.
