09 Apr 2024

The first archaeological expedition of the 2024 field season of the Institute of Archaeology commenced with research work at the settlement site of Karakabak. The site is being investigated as part of the implementation of the State Program of Scientific Research of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan "The Hun-Sarmatian Epoch in the History of Kazakhstan: Interdisciplinary Research, Analysis, and Reconstruction".

The settlement of Karakabak is located in the Tupkaragan district of the Mangystau region. The area of the settlement covers more than 3 hectares. This site is currently the only known urban-type settlement in the Aral-Caspian region that existed as a major trade and craft center from the 3rd to 5th centuries.

In the current field season, the Margulan Institute of Archaeology  plans to conduct approximately 50 archaeological expeditions in various regions of Kazakhstan.
