Archaeological expertise

One of the important areas of activity at the A. Kh. Margulan Institute of Archaeology is conducting archaeological expertise. A comprehensive set of laboratories and departments within the Institute is involved in carrying out archaeological expertise.

The expertise of historical and cultural heritage objects is one of the key categories of archaeological research. Archaeological expertise should be understood as a set of scientific and research measures conducted by an expert archaeologist, involving competent specialists from other (humanities, natural sciences) fields of scientific activity, aimed at identifying, studying, and further preserving the archaeological object (monument, artifact, landscape, etc.).

The expertise of historical and cultural heritage objects is conducted both in laboratory and field conditions. These types of expertise are closely interconnected and of equal priority, and can be carried out in various sequences. These types of expertise can be conducted separately or in close connection, where laboratory research may not be possible without field investigations, and vice versa.
