Zholdasbaev Sayden (1936-2021)

Saiden Zholdasbayev began his scientific career as a teacher at the "Oktyabr" school in the Uigur district of Almaty region. In 1969-1972, he completed postgraduate studies at the Ch. Valikhanov Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. During these years, he participated in the work of the SKCAE, and headed the detachment. In 1976, he defended his Candidate’s thesis. During 1972-1978, he worked as a researcher at the IHAE, as a teacher at KazPI named after Abai, and at KazSU named after al-Farabi. In 1998, he defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences, and in 1999, he was awarded the title of Professor. Since 2002, he has been the head of the Department of Archaeology, Ethnology and Museum Work at the Yasawi International Kazakh-Turkish Lyceum, since 2008, he has been elected director of the Center for Archaeological Research at this university.
He studied the cultures and traditional economy of the Middle Ages of the 15th-17th centuries. He carried out archaeological excavations at the wintering grounds of the Kazakhs and proved that the Kazakhs were engaged in agriculture.
The total number of his published scientific papers is more than 250; these are five monographs, four textbooks, five textbooks for students, scientific articles that have been published in encyclopedias and various publications. He also published textbooks "Kazakhstan in antiquity and the Middle Ages" for higher educational institutions.
Saiden Zholdasbayev participated in congresses, conferences and seminars, including the ones held abroad. S. Zholdasbayev was a scientific reviewer of eight doctoral, ten candidate dissertations, and supervisor of more than ten scientific candidates.
In the last years of his life, S. Zholdasbayev explored the medieval city of Sygnak, one of the largest cities in Kazakhstan. He received interesting materials. The main scientific directions of S. Zholdasbayev were the study of urbanization and the history of Kazakhstan in the 15th-19th centuries.
Saiden Zholdasbayev passed away in 2021.
