Kazakh archaeologists studied the ancient traditions of tandyr-making in Kyrgyzstan

In June-July 2025 within the framework of grant financing AP19678131 “Studying the pottery of South Kazakhstan and adjacent territories (Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan): traditions and modernity”, an international ethnographic expedition of the Margulan Institute of Archeology to study pottery production under the guidance of S.Zh. Rakhimzhanova, where participated Zh.T.. Akkoshkarova (Margulan Institute of Archeology), Ph.D. N.Yu. Petrova (Institute of Archeology RAS, Moscow, Russia), associate professor of Osh State University N.K. Marazykov (Osh, Kyrgyzstan), doctoral candidate Indiana Lokotar (Namur, Belgium).
Field research was carried out for the first time on the territory of the cities Osh, Uzgen, in the Kara-Susky Nookat, Alai, Chon-Alai, Aravan, Uzgen districts of the Osh region and in Bishkek.
As a result of the research, archaic principles of choosing raw materials and molding masses, various options for constructing tandoors were identified, unique information was obtained that reveals more widely existing ideas about the customs and traditions that formed in Central Asia.
Much attention was paid to the study of the construction of residential buildings. Thus, the existence of both male and female pottery in this region was discovered.
